Communicating Instructions Visually

The task here was to simply educate on how to cook hard/soft boiled eggs through use of imagery only, no words or numbers. I’m happy to say I know how to cook hard boiled eggs, but what was interesting to find out on how many different ways people do the same task, you’re always so set in your way that it’s kind of like a culture shock when people have a completely different technique. At first we worked individually to create a simple six image guide to depict how to boil an egg. I went with this very simple style, thick black outlines and a kind of cartoony look. I used symbols and also used the hob’s flame and the water to indicate temperature.

Afterwards I was formed into a team where collectively we had to re-create this six image guide again but obviously we had to come to an agreement on what to show. We decided we didn’t want to use colours as we felt using imagery and symbolism would convey the instruction just as successfully.

This was an interesting task, trying to communicate precise instruction with only pictures is challenging. Trying to convey something universally so anyone could follow is kind of harrowing. However I felt my team did well.
