Final – Culture/Explore

I had a goal with this piece, make something that looks victorian, and I’d confidently say I achieved that 60-70%? I enjoyed making it, though, looking through existing victorian posters and picking out bits I liked was fun. My one regret is I wish I had more illustrations on it cause old posters were usually cluttered with imagery.

Gods n Bricks – Culture/Lines

godsnlines

As mentioned before I have a deep love for mythology and the unnatural, I’m like a moth to a flame with the stuff. One of the more appealing aspects of culture is their gods and deities. The Greek Pantheon is a well known set of gods in the world, usually used in advertising and logo design because of the symbols they embody. I wanted to make a kind of combo piece of culture and line by drawing these gods, but with a lot of line details.

On the other half of the page is bricks, when exploring natural line sin life I was attracted to a brick wall with all this very uniform arrangement of stone which was visually a fun ride.

Sea n’ Bones – Culture/Explore

When in the McManus Museum I was interesting in the history of Whale Hunting. There were all these little trinkets and memorabilia from an activity that wasn’t seen as severe as it is nowadays. They also had the skeleton of a smaller whale which just made the exhibit more complete. I wanted to combine all these features into one image. I think if I went with it for one of my final four, I’d like to make it like a Victorian poster, with that old faded style with large intricate type.

Graveyards – Culture

graves

When getting to know Dundee I found a really interesting place, maybe it makes me weird, but I kinda love graveyards. There a quiet about them I just get lost in and the history that surrounds you is fascinating. One stone could be the grave a soldier, carpenter even a pirate. So many unique lives in one place. There’s one just down the road from the University and Id explore a lot in my first weeks here. When we were asked to think about culture my brain went straight to how we treat death and the customs associated with it. In many cultures death is treated differently, sometimes is a party, others times it’s a deeply spiritual affair. I basically just explored the stones and drew basic shapes and some colours I saw a lot of. Also pigeons love it there.
